Food and beverage ERP is a single system that runs the operational and financial side of a food or beverage business: purchasing, receiving, inventory, the warehouse, orders, shipping, production, quality, and accounting, all from the same transactions.
What makes it “food” ERP is not a separate module. It is that the core of the system treats lots, dates, and quality status as part of every inventory movement, rather than as optional fields someone may or may not fill in. When a pallet is received, it carries its lot and expiration date. When product is picked, the system decides which lot ships. When a supplier calls about a problem, the system can show every customer who received the affected product.

Many food companies do both: a manufacturer that also distributes other brands, or a distributor that repacks, blends, or private-labels. For them, running distribution and production in the same system matters even more, because a lot that is made in one part of the business is sold in the other. Traceability is where food ERP earns its keep. When a supplier reports a problem with an ingredient or a product lot, the questions come fast: where is it now, what was it used in, which customers received it, and how much is still in your warehouses? The answers have to be complete and quick, because every hour spent assembling them from paper and spreadsheets is an hour unsafe product may be in the market.
In the United States, the FDA’s Food Traceability Rule under Section 204 of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires companies that handle foods on the Food Traceability List to keep specific records, called key data elements, for critical tracking events such as receiving, transformation, and shipping, and to provide them to the FDA quickly when asked. An ERP that captures lots at every transaction produces those records as a byproduct of normal work, rather than as a separate compliance project.
