ERP for Plumbing Distributors: Catalogs, Job Pricing, and Will-Call

Plumbing distribution looks simple from the outside: pipe, fittings, valves, fixtures, and water heaters, sold to contractors.

From the inside, it is one of the hardest catalogs in distribution. Tens of thousands of SKUs that differ by size, material, and connection type. Products bought by the bundle or the pallet and sold by the foot or the each. Contractors who need job pricing, will-call pickup, and delivery to the site tomorrow morning. And commodity costs, especially copper, that move faster than a price list.
This guide explains what plumbing distributors need from an ERP system and the scenarios to test before you choose one. For the broader evaluation, see our distribution ERP software buyer’s guide.
A plumbing catalog multiplies quickly: every fitting comes in multiple sizes, materials (copper, PVC, CPVC, PEX, brass, cast iron, steel), and connection types. Counter staff and inside sales need to find the right item fast, usually from a contractor's description rather than a part number. That makes item structure, attributes, and search as important as the inventory counts themselves. See handling high SKU counts and complex catalogs.
Pipe may be bought by the bundle, stocked by the length, and sold by the foot. Fittings arrive in boxes and sell by the each. If conversions are wrong or handled outside the system, both inventory and margin are wrong. See ERP for complex units of measure.
Contractors expect their negotiated pricing, and larger jobs often get a quoted price for a defined list of materials. The ERP needs to apply customer-specific and job-specific pricing automatically, honor quotes through the life of the job, and show the margin on each line before it ships. See managing customer-specific pricing.
Copper pipe and fittings, and products tied to resin and steel, can change in cost quickly. When costs move, distributors need to update replacement costs and pricing fast, see which open quotes are now underwater, and understand margin by product line. Accurate landed cost matters too, for imported products. See landed cost tracking.
Plumbing orders leave the building in several ways: picked up at the counter, delivered on your own trucks, shipped by carrier, or staged for a contractor to collect later. One job may be released in phases as construction progresses. The ERP should handle partial shipments, multiple deliveries per order, and staged orders without creating duplicate paperwork. See backorder management for distributors.
Distributors with showrooms sell fixtures and finishes that are often special-ordered for a specific homeowner or project. Those orders need to be tracked from vendor purchase through receipt and delivery, tied to the customer who ordered them, so nothing is left in the warehouse or sold to the wrong customer. See special order management.

Strong item search across a large catalog, flexible units of measure, contractor and job pricing, fast cost updates for commodity products, multi-branch inventory, and fulfillment that handles will-call, delivery, and phased job-site orders.
Update replacement costs as soon as they change, review margin on open quotes and contracts, and price new orders from current cost. That is much easier when costs, quotes, and pricing live in one system.
Yes, if it supports multiple shipments per order and staged releases, so one job order can be delivered in parts as construction progresses.
